Starting a new job can be pretty worrying so it’s important to give new employees the right support from the first few days. Good training can help people understand their role and get used to the workplace so taking the time to train staff properly can also help them become part of your team more quickly.

Introduce them to the role

Start by explaining what the job is and what you expect them to do. Show them around the workplace, introduce them to their colleagues, explain how the business works and it’s also a good idea to go through any important company policies. Many businesses use elearning compliance training, such as the examples seen here, //www.adempi.co.uk/compliance-training/elearning-courses to cover topics like health and safety and workplace rules during the first few days.

Give them support

New employees will usually learn best by watching someone with experience before trying the tasks themselves. Get them to ask questions and let them know it’s okay if they don’t remember everything straight away. Giving each new starter a mentor can make a big difference and Acas says a good induction can also help new employees get used to their new role.

Keep checking in

Training shouldn’t end after the first week, so make sure you check how new employees are getting on and ask if they need any extra help. Regular feedback can help them improve and be more confident, and when people feel supported, they’re more likely to enjoy their job and become a valuable long-term member of the team.
