ToggleMost first aid certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of completion of a course. After this period, a full Emergency First Aid Training Renewal Course must be completed in order to remain a certified First Aider.
Your skills in using a defibrillator or giving heart lung resuscitation will in fact decrease with the passing of each year. By completing an annual refresher (usually a half day session) you will be kept up to date and in full confidence to deal with any emergencies.
Depending on the circumstances of the team, higher-risk situations could be covered by yearly Emergency First Aid refresher courses or, better still, every two years as appropriate.
It is not possible to extend the date of a first aid certificate that has already expired. It is necessary to go back to the beginning of the course and complete a full course of Emergency First Aid Training.

Write the date of expiry of your new First Aid Certificate in your diary or calendar the moment you are given your new certificate. Set a reminder to renew three months prior to the date of expiry.
You should remember to renew your first aid cover when it lapses.
