Stress can affect us in many ways. It can be physical or emotional, and it comes in different intensities.

Stress can be beneficial in certain situations, according to research. Stress makes us alert and improves our performance in certain situations. Stress is only beneficial when it’s short-lived. Stress that is excessive or prolonged can cause illnesses like heart disease, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

When you are threatened or upset by a situation, your body will create a stress reaction. It can lead to a range of physical symptoms and change your behaviour.

Stress symptoms include physical symptoms

Stress affects people differently. Stress can cause sleeping difficulties, sweating or changes in appetite.

Stress hormones are released in the body, causing symptoms like these. The ‘fight-or-flight’ response is what we call it. Adrenaline and noradrenaline hormones increase blood pressure, heart rate and sweating. This helps to prepare your body for an urgent situation. These hormones may also decrease blood flow to the skin and your stomach. Cortisol is another stress hormone that releases sugar and fat into your system.

You may suffer from headaches, nausea, indigestion, and dizziness. You might also experience palpitations, a faster breathing rate or various aches and discomforts. You may put yourself at risk for heart attacks and strokes in the long run. Consider Acupuncture Gloucester for stress. Visit Purelands for Acupuncture Gloucester.

Stress and its emotional and behavioural effects

You may feel irritability, anxiety or low self-esteem when you are stressed. This can cause you to be withdrawn, indecisive, or even tearful.

It is possible to experience periods of anxiety, constant worrying, or racing thoughts. Some people notice a change in their behaviour. Some people may become more aggressive, verbally or physically aggressive or lose their temper. They can cause physical symptoms and make you feel worse.
