Choosing a book printer to print your books isn’t as simple as choosing the cheapest option. Ask these questions before committing to a printer.
Can I See a Printed Sample?
Ask to have a sample printed on the exact paper weight and finish that you want for your printed item covers. A glossy 130gsm cover printed as samples looks very different to an uncoated printed sample.
What Are Your Minimum Quantities?
Will you be able to price short runs cost effectively? I’m talking here of orders of 50 or so up to 150 copies. The minimum order quantity for longer print runs can sometimes be 500 copies or more.
What File Format Do You Need?
Most printers want print-ready PDFs (such as ones that have been pre-flighted by your printing company) with bleed and crop marks set up correctly. Be sure to check with your printer for their exact requirements before finalising your artwork, as changes to your files late in the process can incur extra costs and cause delays.
Do You Offer a Proof Before the Full Run?
Will I receive a proof (physical or digital) prior to the bulk print run? Will this be included in the price or charged on top?
How Long Will the Job Take?
It’s also worth establishing a timescale for your print job and communicating any launch dates. Print timescales can vary considerably and it’s always worth verifying a printer’s time scale and confirming in writing.
