Goth Gardening: Designing a Dramatic, All-Black Moon Garden

While most people associate gardens with sunshine and colourful flowers, there is another style known as “goth gardening” that encourages the use of darker colours within garden design.

One example of a goth gardening space is a moon garden that is completely black in colour. While true black flowers do not exist within the natural world, plants have been created that contain high levels of anthocyanin, which is the pigment responsible for dark flower colours. Black mondo grass is one type of plant that can create a moody atmosphere within the garden, as are elderberry plants with dark purple leaves.

Midnight blooms like black pansies and roses can be added to these gardens to further improve their goth theme. Contrasting the darkness of these plants can also help to create visual interest within the garden. For example, adding white flowers to the moon garden will add contrast to the darkness of the rest of the plants, while adding plants with silver leaves like dusty miller will reflect light from the moon. Adding features like charcoal slate pathways, weathered iron gates, or a black granite water feature can also help to finish the goth moon garden design. Once night begins to fall on the moon garden, the foliage of the plants will recede into the shadows, leaving the silver leaves and white flowers visible within the moonlight.
