Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.

There can be no equality or opportunity if men and women and children be not shielded in their lives from the consequences of great industrial and social processes which they cannot alter, control, or singly cope with.

EQUALITY

It is a strange fact that freedom and equality, the two basic ideas of democracy, are to some extent contradictory. Logically considered, freedom and equality are mutually exclusive, just as society and the individual are mutually exclusive.

All men are born equally free.

Real equality is immensely difficult to achieve, it needs continual revision and monitoring of distributions. And it does not provide buffers between members, so they are continually colliding or frustrating each other.

Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance.

Techy Problems in the Home

We are fortunate to live in an age where technology is accessible and helpful. Throughout the past eighteen months, during the pandemic in particular, we have come to rely on technology for many things – from the ability to hold conference calls with people all over the world from the comfort of our home office, to catching up with family and friends, to being able to watch the films and tv programmes to help us relax and unwind.

Tips for decorating long and narrow rooms

Not all rooms are easy to decorate. Some are odd shapes or have alcoves and nooks that require special consideration. Here are some handy tips for decorating a living room that is narrow and long.

  1. Furniture placement

A long and narrow room is tricky and it’s easy to arrange furniture so it feels like you’re living in a bowling alley. Avoid the temptation to place furniture on each of the walls so foot traffic must go down the middle, breaking up the space. Instead, consider placing a sofa against one wall with chairs close to it in front, so the walkway can be behind the furniture.

  1. Try not to push furniture against walls

By creating this tunnel effect with furniture, you are just amplifying the narrowness and length of the room. Consider creating a more circular effect with furniture placed towards the centre of the room and not around the edges. This creates a warmier, more intimate space and takes the focus away from the narrow space. The focus of the space then becomes the cosy nature of the furniture and not the walkway space through the middle.

  1. Circular furniture

Try to avoid using furniture that is oblong or rectangular in shape as this will only serve to emphasize the awkward shape of the room. Consider round tables, a circular coffee table in the centre, rounded soft lampshades and even rounded or circular artwork and mirrors on the walls. This helps people to see a rounded softness instead of straight lines and angles.

  1. Paint

In terms of colour choices, it’s best to choose lighter, pale but warm shades. Choosing anything too dark will only serve to close in the space even more. Lighter colours give the impression of space and airiness, so focus on opening up the space and not making it feel smaller. For walls that need some TLC before painting, consider a Plasterer Gloucester and visit pure plasterers.

  1. Divide

For rooms that are extra long, a useful trick can be to divide the space into different sections. Consider creating different zones that can be marked by area rugs, for example. You might choose to have a seating area, a dining area or a section for a home office. Sectioning the space like this draws attention to the different aspects of the room and not its shape.

  1. Vertical Attention

Another way to distract from a narrow or long space is to draw the eye upwards. Consider hanging artwork close to the ceiling, installing a tall bookcase or using vertical striped wallpaper to increase the visual height of the room. Impressive light fixtures are a useful way to draw attention upwards as well. Perhaps a chandelier that is wider than it is long might look amazing in your space?

  1. L or U Shaped Sofa

If your sofa does need to go against one wall, consider an L or U shaped set up which has the effect of creating a cosy, welcoming place to relax that won’t emphasise the length of the room too much.

Spotting and treating Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that is passed on from an infected person to another through a variety of sexual activities. It is an infection that affects men as well as women and there are a number of ways that you can protect yourself from catching Chlamydia. The most important of these is to practice protected sex and to use a condom. You can also get yourself tested using a Chlamydia Testing kits Bexley company like checkurself.org.uk/plus/home_sti_kits/ where you can complete the kit in the comfort of your own home, send the kit off to the lab who will then email or call you with your results, depending on what preferences you have given.

As with a number of sexually transmitted infections, chlamydia doesn’t carry many symptoms and so people can pass on the infection unknowingly. It is for this reason that safe sex is so important, as is thinking about getting yourself and your partner tested for a number of STIs before you begin a new intimate relationship.

Some of the symptoms that people experience can include pain in urinating, unusual discharge from the penis, vagina and anus, pain and swelling that occurs in the testicles and for women pain during intercourse, bleeding after sex and in between periods. Not all of these symptoms will be present and most people don’t experience any issues whilst being infected.

If left untreated not only can you pass Chlamydia onto others during sexual activities it can also cause issues in the future with pelvic inflammatory disease in women, issues with fertility, chronic pelvic pain and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancies. In men, the long term effects can include inflammation of the testicles known as epididymitis and also reactive arthritis. This form of arthritis can occur in the joints and urethra and can affect men and women alike, although it appears to occur more often in men.

Treatments usually include a course of antibiotics and anyone who could potentially have been infected will also be tested and treated where appropriate. If any of the long term effects mentioned above are experienced a further course of antibiotics may be prescribed or in the case of reactive arthritis, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to help with the inflammatory symptoms.

Chlamydia is the most common STI in the UK and it is most common in young adults and sexually active teenagers. In order to help remove some of the barriers to getting tested for people in this age range, in particular embarrassment, the home testing kits, like the ones mentioned above, give them the option to have these tests completed by themselves and the results reported to them privately.
