When it comes to what to wear at a climbing wall the dress code is relaxed, however choosing the right items to bring will enable you to participate in your climbing session safely and be as comfortable as possible.

Choose Close-Fitting Clothing

Loose clothing can get caught in the holds as you move around the wall. This can pull you off balance or even tear the clothing. Close fitting clothing allows you to see your body clearly as you climb. This is more important than you think as climbing involves placing your feet in small holes and needing to see exactly where your feet are.

Pick Stretchy Bottoms

Leggings and slim fit joggers are recommended as they allow for high foot placements without restricting the knee. Jeans and stiff trousers are not suitable for climbing as they restrict movement and can cause chafing on seams.

Keep Your Top Simple

A close-fitting t-shirt or base layer that is tucked into your shorts is the ideal choice for your top. A hoodie is not recommended as drawstrings can get caught in the holds and zip pulls on fleeces can scratch the wall surface. A plain fitted t-shirt is the best choice of climbing top.

Sort Your Footwear Early

Most climbing walls hire out climbing shoes, so it’s worth asking at the desk if they have any available. If you bring your own, then soft soled climbing shoes are best for feeling holds. Bouldering walls generally don’t allow bare feet, so you can wear shoes or specialised climbing socks.

Leave Jewellery in Your Bag

Jewellery such as rings and bangles can get caught on holds causing serious injury to your fingers. Also belts with metal buckles can scratch resin holds. Please make sure to wear climbing suitable clothing and remove any jewellery that may get caught or scratch the holds. With a bit of planning before you arrive at the climbing wall you can ensure you have the best climbing session possible.
