Top money-saving tips for students to know

When you’re a student, money’s always tight. Therefore, it helps to have some tips up your sleeve to save wherever possible. Here are some great ways to make that student loan go further.

1. Get a part-time job

Student life is expensive. Even if you’re renting one of the more affordable Exeter student homes, keeping your living costs low and going home as much as possible to stock up on home cooked food and free laundry, it still adds up. So, look to earn extra money if you can. A part-time job will also boost your CV and give you a head-start on earning and the world of work

2. Learn to budget

Because you’ll stop wasting money on impulse purchases and poor spending habits, if you learn the skill of budgeting, then you can afford better food, quality Exeter student homes and a fun social life. Buy a cheaper brand in the grocery store, set up direct debits to save money, don’t buy on credit, and get into the habit of batch cooking. The more you stay on top of your finances, the more in control you’ll feel.

3. Stop buying new!

Hit up car boot sales and charity shops, sign up to food sharing apps, and get yourself a second-hand bike for local travel. There are very few things that you need to buy new and many physical items can be replaced with free or low-cost digital services, especially for books, magazines and content. Be creative and share resources wherever possible with your friends and housemates.

4. Make your own

Take your own coffee with you in the morning, make breakfast and carry it in a Thermos, prepare your own sandwiches and cook your own curry. All of these steps will save you plenty of money as you won’t feel the need to buy food and snacks on the go. Keep a tally of the money you save and you’ll quickly feel motivated to keep going.

Try these money-saving tips and see how different your bank balance is at the end of term!
