Can ham be frozen?

It has happened to anyone that they find themselves faced with an offer at the cured meat counter and buy large quantities of ham, which they then do not know how to dispose of, with the risk of throwing away a large part of it.

In the refrigerator, cold cuts can only be kept for a few days, then they spoil.

Not bad, since they can be frozen, and ham is no exception.

First of all, it is important to buy only top-quality ham, whether raw or cooked. The cheap ham, in fact, is often added with preservatives and contains a lot of salt, which does not go along well with freezing.

It is therefore good to use, especially if you intend to freeze it, ham that contains little salt and little fat, another element that gets damaged in the freezer.

If the ham, both cooked and raw, contains a lot of fat, it is best to eliminate most of it before placing it in the freezer.

How to freeze raw or cooked ham

If it is a whole piece, the best thing is to put the ham under a vacuum before freezing it. If you have a vacuum packing machine, you can also do it at home. Otherwise, just ask your trusted butcher at the time of purchase.

The sliced ham, on the other hand, must be deprived of the paper in which it is sold, and then placed well spread in bags to freeze food, already portioned.

In the freezer, cooked and raw ham, both whole and sliced, can be kept for about a month.

To defrost it, it must be passed from the freezer to the refrigerator for a few hours to avoid thermal shocks. In any case, before consuming it is good to check its appearance and smell.

Once defrosted, the ham must be consumed within 24 hours and never refrozen. The defrosted ham can be used not only for cooking but also consumed exactly like the fresh one, in sandwiches or sandwiches.
