Cleaning shared spaces in the time of coronavirus

Due to the recent global pandemic, efforts to keep surfaces clean to stop the spread of coronavirus have been at the forefront of people’s minds. Of course, the benefits of cleaning and sanitation work for all bacteria and viruses. Special attention is being shown to areas where people come together, such as in offices, schools, shopping centres and at events, for example. Here are some tips for cleaning an office to stop coronavirus.

Sanitising – Surfaces need to be disinfected and sanitised. A more thorough clean is required than perhaps we were used to doing. A simple wipe over with a duster is not going to offer the same protection as a deep clean. For enhanced cleaning, virucidal cleaning agents can be used to clean surfaces that a lot of people might be touching, such as tables, chairs, door handles and railings, for example. Other touch points include telephone handsets, lift buttons, desks, light switches, door panels, toilet flushes and sinks, to name just a few. Enhanced sanitation will be required for these types of areas.

Disposable Cleaning Items – When carrying out an enhanced sanitation clean, it is important that cleaning equipment is disposed of correctly after one use. This includes items like mop heads, wipes and gloves. Do not use the same wipes on multiple surfaces, it must be one for each and then disposed of. This is to help avoid the risk of cross contamination of different surfaces. Carrying out this level of cleaning is time-consuming and requires a level of expertise. Encourage Hygiene – Improving education and providing encouragement is also a good idea to spread the message (not the germs). Posters around offices and schools, for example, to give a guide on how we should be washing our hands properly etc. Hands are the main culprit in the spread of viruses. They catch droplets which are then transferred onto another surface when we touch something. We also tend to touch our faces a lot during the course of the day and then touch other objects. Polite reminders in public places can help in the fight against virus transmission.

Use the Right Products – It’s important to use cleaning products that provide protection against coronavirus. Any old cleaning agent won’t do, it must have certain properties and ingredients. It is essential that proper disinfectants are used in order to combat bacteria and viruses.

Reduce the Need to Touch – A plan that can be implemented during times of outbreak include measures such as assigning individuals their own workspace and encouraging them not to share equipment. Perhaps a one way system can be introduced to reduce the need for people to mix unnecessarily and prop open non-fire doors to reduce the need for touching. This will also help to reduce the number of items that require cleaning on a continual basis.
