How the MOT Test has Changed Over the Years

Having a car was something that was a luxury many years ago and certainly not something owned by everyone. Much like the television set, a car was something that very few people had, so the roads in the UK were fairly quiet. However, during the 1950s, all kinds of household gadgets and tech became more accessible, and more and more people started to own all the modern luxuries – amongst them was the car.

With more people taking to the roads, there had to be more services in place for the extra traffic, and also there needed to be more laws in place to keep the roads safe. In 1960, the MOT test was introduced in the UK.

Originally, this was only something that vehicles that were ten years or older had to undertake, but by the time the 1960s were over, the rules had changed to what they still are today, cars that are three years or older need to have an MOT test.

Nowadays when you go for your MOT test at somewhere like this MOT Gloucester based company https://www.123carandcommercial your vehicle will have to meet a wide range of standards and undergo many different checks before it can be deemed worthy of a pass. However, many of these requirements are things that have been gradually introduced over the years to make sure that safety standards are maintained.

For example, it wasn’t until 1969 that seatbelts had to be present in the car, in 1977 a host of checks on windscreen wipers, the horn and the chassis were all introduced, and it wasn’t until 1992 that the anti lock braking system needed to be checked by law.
