Old Man – Neil Young
Kind of ironic with a name like Young but he did indeed write a song about being an old man. The song featured on Young’s 1972 album Harvest and compares the experiences of a young and old man, reflecting that their needs are similar. Many needs might be similar but in old age, we often need things that young don’t – like a home without stairs, for example! Time – Pink Floyd
Appearing on the 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon, this melancholic track explores the concept of the passing of time and how most don’t realise until it’s too late. There is a realisation that as we age, we are not preparing for life but are in the middle of it. Sounds like a good time to start preparing for care when we are older. Most of us begin dealing with the odd grey hair in our thirties and unfortunately, this doesn’t ever get any better! However, those grey hairs have been earned and should be worn as a badge of honour. Touch of grey was a 1987 single from the Grateful Dead’s album In The Dark.

Written in 1970 after being told his wife was pregnant, this song reflects on the wish for more time and musings on mortality made even more poignant by his death in a plane crash in 1973. Seize the day is the moral of this song.
