Applications of Hydraulic Systems

Hydraulic systems essentially use fluid of one description or another to create forces that in tune power other appliances. These forces can be kinetic, potential and thermal in their outputs.

The types of applications that use hydraulics include:

• Construction Machinery – hydraulics are used in the brakes and the lifting capacities of a number of different construction vehicles and machinery types. These include diggers and cranes. They are used to allow the machines to lift and move items that are tonnes heavier than the pieces of machinery themselves.

• NASA – hydraulics are used on space shuttles and space sips as auxiliary power sources that work as backup generators in case they are needed during any part of the spaceflight expedition. Hydraulics are also used as a way of helping with the deployment of the landing gear in the shuttle spacecraft.

• Cars & Vehicles – hydraulics are used in the braking systems of many vehicles including cars. The brake fluid is transferred onto the brake pad that then presses down onto the axle of the car which stops the cars. Other areas of cars that use hydraulics include the suspension area of some larger vehicles.
• Forklift Trucks – hydraulics are used to lift the arms on the front of the forklift where the items to be lifted and moved are placed.
